On Thursday, May 24, at 7 p.m. in the social hall of the Murray Hill Presbyterian Church, 940 Talbot Ave, 32205, we will have a “blooming” presentation by Shirley Collier, manager of Lowe’s garden shop. She will “show and tell” us about Jacksonville summer gardening and offer to answer any questions we might have.

With our accustomed summer heat and our unaccustomed drought, her expert advice on lawns, ornamentals, vegetables and flowers will be most welcome. Shirley is as interesting and vibrant as she is clear and knowledgeable. We look forward to her time with us and appreciate her willingness to share her expertise.

Board Elections
This is also the meeting required in our by laws to vote in new board members. We will need a quorum, so please make every effort to fit this meeting us into your busy schedule. The candidates are: President, Jim Robson; First Vice President (programming), Len Burroughs; Second Vice President (membership), Richard Sapp; Treasurer, Steve Walker; Secretary, Rosemary Stout; Members at Large, Chuck Mann, Helene Stewart, Kelly Klinger (Facebook), Z Carter.

The Murray Hill Preservation Association is now a tax deductible organization under the IRS 501c3 status. That means that any donations you make to MHPA may be deducted from your income taxes under charitable donations. Note: this deduction also applies to your membership dues.

This goal has been on our agenda for many years but always seemed to slip from our grasp. This year our board decided to make it a top priority under the responsibility of Jim Robson a board member at large.

The application requires filling out a 56 page form with many confusing questions, but Jim had a lot of help from the rest of the board. If you can picture a 56 page Federal Government form you will have some idea of what it was like.

Please help us celebrate this milestone by writing a tax deductible check to the MHPA, or click the handy donate button below. If you send a check, we will provide a receipt to use with your tax filing. Otherwise, if you use the “Donate” button you can print a receipt directly from your computer and a receipt will be sent to your Email box. This online payment uses PayPal, but you can use your debit or credit card if you don’t have a PayPal account.

First, in November, it was the police coming to my door to ask if I had noticed any activity across the street, where my neighbor had just been burglarized. Then, before Christmas, I heard on the news that childrens’ Christmas gifts, as well as other items, had been stolen in Murray Hill.

After Christmas I heard that an older person had been attacked and robbed outside their Murray Hill home. Now, my friend tells me their friend in Murray Hill is getting a big dog to help protect their house. These are events that have brought crime in our neighborhood to the forefront of my attention. Do you have similar stories?

On Thursday, February 23, at 7:00 p.m., in the social hall of Murray Hill Presbyterian Church, 940 Talbot Avenue, the Murray Hill Preservation Association will have its first meeting of 2012, focusing on crime in our neighborhood. An officer from the Sheriff’s Office will speak to us on statistics, prevention, and will answer questions. We in Murray Hill have a history of working with the police to maintain our neighborhood safety, but we need everyone’s involvement. Please come, bring a neighbor, and find out what we can do to stop crime. All are welcome. See you there.

We are thrilled to welcome new board member at large Kelly Klinger. A UF Gator, Kelly’s taught high school English in Jacksonville for 8 years. Although she rented in San Marco and Riverside, when it came time to buy, a year and a half ago, she fell in love with Murray Hill. Kelly has volunteered to oversee our Facebook page.

Please give special consideration to following her lead and helping out as a new or renewing member, a member who brings in other members, a board member, or by volunteering to help with any community interest you have. In this economic climate it takes extra thought to fund an undertaking that isn’t averting an immediate crisis. Yet, in terms of property values and quality of life, “hands on” involvement can’t be ignored.

Appreciation to all of us for the neighborhood we have built and warmest welcome to Kelly, stepping up to the interesting and fun activities that keep our community the safe, beautiful and rewarding place we love.

The Murray HIll Preservation Association is exploring bringing to the Murray HIll community a wireless internet service for businesses and surrounding private homes. MHPA is working side by side with Daren Dillinger, community leader, 10 year business member of MHPA and co-owner of Mac+PC Tech Pro Technology Company. His company designed and deploys the wireless solution for another community group, the Riverside Avondale Preservation Association, at their weekly Riverside Arts Market. What Mac+PC Tech Pro proposes for MHPA is different and substantially larger in scale. The vision is multiphase but the end goal is to cover the entire Murray HIll community with a FREE wireless internet service that will give business patrons access for their Smart phones, Ipads, etc It is a parallel goal to help home users who may not have any internet in their homes. The service will have features to promote and publicize community events and activities from supporters of MHPA for service users. The service will be family friendly because it will be set up with a device that will not allow access to any objectionable material or activities such as gambling, etc. We are very excited about the possibility of this partnership with Mac+PC Tech Pro. For any more information please contact Daren directly by email, ddillinger@mactechpro.com , or by business phone, 904-465-4518.

On Thursday, November 10, 2011, the city recreation and community services department held a meeting at the Murray Hill Art Center to discuss its future. The meeting was attended by almost 40 community members, as well as by representatives from the city, from Councilman Love, who was in China, and from the Art League of Jacksonville. Quinn Bledsoe, COJ Program Manager, explained that the city plans to use “community partners,” private sector groups, to organize and provide services as the city can no longer afford its previous levels of programming. This idea is already working successfully in other parts of Jacksonville.

Craig Erskine, Director, Art League of Jacksonville, expressed great enthusiasm for the facility and the League’s desire to offer many and varied classes and activities there. The Art League finds teachers who will offer classes at as reasonable a cost as possible and organizes the classes according to student demand. In addition to the traditional arts that have been offered in the past, such additional areas as music, writing, and drama are possibilities. From time to time scholarships become available. The hope is that no student need be turned away due to inability to pay. The city takes none of the fees. Communication of program details is done by website, email, phone and literature.

Plans for renovation of the building have been in place for some time. Alice Jones, the person in charge of these, said it was her fault little has been done so far; she has “a lot of projects.” Funding has been approved since May. The quickest the work can be completed is five months from now, she said. Upon request, she provided a phone number whereby MHPA board members and others can call to keep track of progress. Plans include enclosing the ac units, new flooring, locking cabinets, drying racks, easel racks, new stools, chairs, and pressure washing the outside. Community volunteers for yardwork/landscaping would be welcome.

We greatly appreciate the city’s dedication to maintaining as much of the neighborhood’s character and resources for a rich, healthy life as possible during the difficult economic climate. When the renovations are complete, it will be up to us to support the new programs and take advantage of all they offer.

We wish to give a special, huge, thank you to Murray Hill Presbyterian Church for donating some of their storage space for MHPA’s long term items. Storage of such things as the Christmas decorations for first block, records from the historical neighborhood surveys, some stationery, and dishes for future use at events now no longer requires a monthly payment. The generosity of the church in steadfastly supporting our neighborhood is part of what makes Murray Hill a wonderful place to live!

We are in need of new members and board members. In this economic climate it takes extra thought to fund an undertaking that isn’t averting an immediate crisis. New electronic technology expands our ideas of neighborhood to areas often far away. Yet, in terms of property values and quality of life, “hands on” involvement can’t be ignored. If we don’t keep up with what’s going on at our doorsteps, who will? Imagine our neighborhood if we took away some of MHPA’s accomplishments – a barren first block, streets flooding, no library, a park with few trees, political pairing with Paxon/Lackawanna which doesn’t share our same concerns, increased crime.

We should all appreciate ourselves and each other for the neighborhood we have built. Please consider talking to your neighbors about starting or maintaining an MHPA membership. Please consider serving a short period as a board member at large, attending monthly meetings, keeping in touch, and helping a bit on an issue that attracts you. It’s interesting and fun and will keep our community the safe, beautiful and rewarding place we love.

I decided to take a look at the free insulation program offered by JEA so I called Justin Bouck of AEA (904-716-6018). Justin represents the company that made the presentation at the Murray Hill Preservation Association meeting on October 27. His company, AEA, is the JEA authorized installer for this program. Justin came to my home on Tuesday November 8 and estimated the job. He discovered that my home is 1315 square feet and calculated that JEA would pay for the first 1100 square feet and I that would pay 40 cents per square feet for the additional 215 feet. That amounted to an out of pocket cost to me of $86.00. I authorized the job and his installers arrived as scheduled on Friday the 11th. The crew was very courteous, tidy and efficient doing the entire job in less than an hour. While they were here they also sealed some leaks in my plenum, which is the duct that connects the air handler to the ducts in my attic. There was no additional cost for the sealing portion of the project. All in all, I was amazed at how simple it was for this to happen and that they remained true to their word. Frankly, it seemed too good to be true. The job was completed a week ago as of this writing and, It might be our imagination, but our home feels more comfortable and the A/C seems to be running less.
