FAQ
If I move to Murray Hill am I required to join MHPA?
No. MHPA is a voluntary neighborhood organization. Homeowners and businesses are encouraged, but not required, to become members of MHPA.
If I want to remodel my house or build a new home, is approval from MHPA required?
No. Unlike our neighbors in the Riverside-Avondale and Springfield Historic Districts, Murray Hill does not have historic district status with the City of Jacksonville or the National Register of Historic Places. Therefore, there is no design review or approval process for renovations, remodels or new construction. Of course, you would need to comply with all city regulations and permit requirements.
Does MHPA have a list of recommended vendors or contractors that specialize in working on older homes?
No, the association does not maintain such a list. Riverside-Avondale Preservation does maintain such a list, which is available to members of RAP upon request.
I want to renovate my home in Murray Hill. A friend told me that there is grant money available to help with the renovation costs. Is this true?
No, your friend might be thinking of a program in the Springfield neighborhood several years ago but is no longer available. There are no programs providing funding for renovation of homes in Murray Hill. There may be programs available for seniors or low income families through neighborhood churches or other community organizations.
I’m having a problem with a house on my street. The grass is overgrown, there are junk cars parked in the yard and the paint is peeling. What can I do?
To report a nuisance property or code violation, please call 630-CITY (2489) and register a complaint. You may remain anonymous if you’d like. You may also register a complaint online at www.coj.net.
There is a tractor trailer or boat parked at my neighbor’s house. What can I do?
If the tractor trailer/boat is parked on private property, then call 630-CITY (2489) or register your complaint at www.coj.net.
If the tractor trailer/boat is parked in the right of way or street, then call the Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number at 630-0500.
How can I research the history of my home?
A great place to start is with the previous owners and the neighbors. Ask around and you’ll be surprised what you can find out. Another resource is the Main Library’s owernership history. Just bring your property tax record card with you and the clerks will help you find the computer records and microfilms about your home. A great resource with more tips is www.coj.net, search for historic preservation.
